Apple again switches sides on Mac graphics
Two new reports may reinforce claims that Apple is switching back to NVIDIA GPUs for the new MacBook Pro. The Verge cites a “trusted source” as saying Apple is migrating away from AMD video. ABC News is echoing the same view from its own sources, but further suggesting that Apple will use the GeForce GT 650M.
Rumors that Apple would make the move to NVIDIA hardware have persisted since November. Apple has not typically played favorites, instead choosing AMD or NVIDIA graphics as it suits the company’s needs, although confrontation with NVIDIA likely influenced one of the switches.
New MacBook Pros are expected to debut at this year’s WWDC, which begins on June 11th. Aside from a change to NVIDIA and Intel Ivy Bridge processors, the major new feature is anticipated to be Retina displays, putting Mac visuals on par with the sharpness of iOS devices.
