Full-featured version boasts 500MB sound library
IK Multimedia have announced a new version of SampleTank 2.5, dubbed SampleTank Free for Mac and Windows, that offers users a selected 500MB sound library at no cost. The free version is as full-featured as the original, but only includes a limited range of sounds compared to the paid version.
For more than a decade, the company been serving the needs of digital musicians, producers and hobbyists with a range of hardware and software devices, and alongside AmpliTube (aimed primarily at guitarists/bassists), SampleTank is one of their most popular sellers, with over 24,000 multi-sampled sounds and loops on offer through add-on packs, and of course users can create and import their own samples.
The samples included in SampleTank Free cover loops, electronic, electric and acoustic sounds, and users can add sounds from the company’s other offerings, like Microslave Philharmonik or Sonik Synth 2. The program includes three synth engines, polyphonic pitch-shift and time-stretch, resampling, a 16-part multi-timbral sound module with layerable/mixable parts, 33 DSP effects (and supports plug-ins like Audio Units and VST) and imports WAV, AIFF, SDII, AKAI S-1000/3000 and SampleCell instruments.
The program runs well on laptops and can be used either in studio or for live performances. The suggested configuration for SampleTank Free is either a dual 2GHz or higher G5 Mac running 10.4 or higher, or a Intel Core2Duo Mac 2.3GHz or better, running 10.4 or higher. Two gigabytes of RAM or more are also recommended.
Downloading SampleTank Free requires an existing (free) account with IK Multimedia. New users can sign up on the download page.
