Sprint to Turn iPod Touch Into 3G Mobile Hotspot?

By Gary, July 30, 2010 3:40 am

Phone Scoop yesterday discovered new regulatory filings posted by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission showing a new Sprint-branded 3G mobile hotspot device manufactured by ZTE that appears to be in the form of a designed case to wrap around Apple’s iPod touch. The Peel, as FCC photos suggest it will be called, seems to be a carriage sled for a tablet style device like the iPod touch. The Peel does not seem to connect to its host device, and it seems to be a specially designed Wi-Fi hotspot device that could offer EV-DO networking to an iPod touch in a package that could be clampe...... The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple is “looking into” reports of issues being experienced by iPhone 3G users who have upgraded to the company’s new iOS 4. By Gary, July 28, 2010 10:59 pm

Nokia is developing a full-fledged web browser for the desktop, Eldar Murtazin confirmed today after getting access to a beta. The famed target of Nokia said Ovi Browser would be based on WebKit, like Nokia’s mobile web browser as well as Apple’s Safari and Google Chrome, but would tie directly into Ovi services. Users could shop some of the Ovi Store and check their calendars, contacts and e-mail. The browser’s public availability isn’t known, but Nokia has strongly hinted at the plan with a Twitter account and both Beta Labs and Ovi download pages that are locked but...... Read more

Apple pulls Droid X into antenna battle

By Gary, July 24, 2010 1:59 pm

As with the countless demonstrations of this phenomena on the iPhone4, Apple’s demonstrations of signal attenuation on other phones are largely meaningless. And yes, Consumer Reports should be ashamed of their widely publicized report because it revealed how unsound their testing methodology was and hurt their credibility as a review service. What this discussion lacks is a truly meaningful evaluation of reception performance on a variety of phones. Notice that I said _reception_ performance rather than _antenna_ performance. We don’...... Read more
