Chris Paget wants to demonstrate how easy it is to snoop in on mobile-phone conversations. The question is: Will the federal authorities allow it?
At the Defcon security conference in Las Vegas on Saturday, Paget is scheduled to demonstrate a device called an IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identity) catcher, which can be used to intercept mobile-phone data on the GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) networks used by much of the world.

While the big news out of Apple’s iPhone 4 press conference was the announcement of free cases for customers and a positioning of antenna issues as affecting nearly all smartphones, there was additional news from Apple CEO Steve Jobs, including acknowledgment of proximity sensor issues with a fix promised for the next iOS software update. Apple’s CEO isn’t the only one writing open letters these days – a US Senator has taken notice of that Consumer Reports post advising against buying an iPhone 4 until Apple fixes its flawed antenna. Riding on that advisory, New York Senator Charles Schumer of the Democratic party sent out an open letter to Apple’s head honcho Steve Jobs.

iPad demand has barely cooled since the tablet went on sale in April, America’s Research Group gauged from a new study. Even as 8.4 percent of those asked already had an iPad, 6.1 percent still planned to buy. With demand still at 70 percent of ownership, the results point to “incredible demand,” ARC founder Britt Beemer said.

Late last week, Wired reported that a lawsuit filed against Apple and AT&T over the carrier’s exclusivity arrangement for the iPhone has received class action status, meaning that it now automatically covers every iPhone customer in the United States.
In an interview Friday with Wired.com, Mark Rifkin, lead counsel representing the plaintiffs of the suit, highlighted that the terms of AT&T’s two-year customer contract say that customers have the option to terminate whenever they wish for a fee to switch to another carrier.

A patent holder that won $612.5 million from Research in Motion in 2006 over the use of e-mail in smartphones has now taken aim at Apple, Google, Microsoft and other companies in a new suit.
NTP Incorporated issued a press release on Friday revealing its lawsuit against Apple, Google, HTC, LG Electronics, Microsoft and Motorola. The complaint was filed in a U.S. District Court in Eastern Virginia, and covers eight patents related to the delivery of e-mail over wireless communications systems.
