HP’s Executive VP Todd Bradley confirmed in an interview on Friday that the company is dropping any future plans for a Microsoft OS on a phone. While he guarded himself by stressing that HP would still be “Microsoft’s biggest customer,” Bradley told CNBC that there would never be a Windows Phone 7 device from HP. All future smartphones will use webOS, he said.
“Our intent is to focus those resources and really make webOS the best OS it can be,” the executive said.

The CTIA, a group representing mobile operators, is trying to block a San Francisco ordinance that would require stores to disclose radiation levels for the phones they sell.
In a lawsuit filed Friday, the CTIA argues that the ordinance unlawfully interferes with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission’s authority over cell phones.

AT&T may be optimistic about its hopes for Windows Phone 7 with a large batch of orders, Altimeter analyst Michael Gartenberg learned Thursday. A reliable source explained that the carrier has ordered eight million devices. It’s not clear whether this is over the total lifespan of the devices or only for a certain period.
Gartnenberg also didn’t learn which phone manufacturers were involved in the order.

Microsoft followed in Apple’s steps today by promising all employees a free smartphone at its Global Exchange meeting. The move would give as many as 90,000 staffers a Windows Phone 7 device when the first ones ship sometime before the holiday. The company didn’t say which company would supply the phones or if it would require that users switch over when at work.

Samsung today vowed to take back a lead in cellphone revenue in France from Apple’s iPhone. Although it still has the most popular phones by sheer volume, shipping 39 percent (4.5 million) of phones in the country, the Korean firm is upset that Apple now represents 26 percent of value in the market where Samsung has 25 percent.
